Contractor numbers rallying according to ONS
While there was a period when the numbers of those who had chosen contracting over traditional employment was rising steadily, the news that there had been a slight drop-off in the numbers of people who were choosing to work for themselves surprised many people. However, it appears that there has been a change in the way people think about the option of contracting as the figures have rallied over the second quarter of 2015.
The figures, released this week by the Office of National Statistics, have shown that although there was a slight decrease year on year, the seventeen-month low that was witnessed between March and May this year has come to an end.
With self-employment creating a significant proportion of the jobs available in the last few years, the government is likely to be relying on the sector to deliver the additional two million members of the labour market that it promised over its time in power. As such, supporting and encouraging those who want to move away from permanent employment and enjoy the flexibility of contracting should be a top priority for policymakers who want to come good on their promise.
Chris Bryce, Chief Executive of the Association for Independent Professionals and the Self Employed, is glad to see that the numbers are rallying and that those who want to enjoy the benefits of working for themselves are taking advantage of the skills gap and resultant high rates of pay on offer.
