Government recognises importance of freelancers and contractors
The Government has created a new All Party Parliamentary Group for the freelance sector which will be chaired by Northampton South MP Brian Binley. Writing on his blog, Brian highlighted the importance of contractors and other freelance workers to the economy and noted that the contribution of the freelance sector is often overlooked, adding, “I am hopeful that this group can bring together freelancers across all different industries, with the common aim of improving the conditions they are faced with.” Something which will certainly be welcome news for the UK’s contractor and freelancer community. Brian also stated that cross party support was given to the formation of the new group, citing the appointments of Jim Dowd as treasurer, Stephen Gilbert as secretary and Stephen Hammond as vice chairman.
Last month, contracting support group PCG urged the government to recognise the benefits a flexible freelance workforce could play in helping the UK as part of its ongoing economic recovery.
