Contractor News Roundup: July 2020
December not only heralded the season of goodwill to all men, but it also saw some spectacular figures when it comes to employment opportunities for IT contractors. The number of temporary opportunities for IT contractors in December grew at the fastest rate since April according to the figures compiled by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation.
The increased availability of contracts in this sector has been attributed to the desire on the part of both clients and contractors wanting to tie up contracts before the Christmas break by the experts at the REC. While the hiring of contractors is usually fairly slow and steady throughout the year, demand rose to 61.0 in December as businesses tried to reach annual targets and pushed hiring rates to their highest in eight months.
While the permanent IT labour market is suffering from the effects of the skills crisis, December’s hiring spree for temporary staff was relatively unaffected by the problems experienced elsewhere and the only skill which proved scarce during this period was Java. This is good news for contractors who have been able to capitalise on the fact that they are able to command higher rates due to their skills being in demand.
Since November, when IT skills were well matched to demand, the overall shortage of technical skills has increased to a total of nine areas of skills in which recruiters are having trouble finding adequately skilled and experienced candidates, with IT security proving one of the worst hit by shortages. High profile data breaches have led businesses to focus on their potential to be compromised, meaning specialists in cyber security have been much sought-after in recent months. Many companies are having to re-think their recruitment strategies in order to ensure that they are able to compete in a marketplace that is increasingly favouring contractors.
