John Lewis hiring plans bring good news for IT contractors
Not only have their skills been amongst the most in demand throughout 2015, but IT contractors could be looking at another profitable year in 2016 as one of the country’s biggest retailers reveals their hiring plans for the upcoming 12 months. John Lewis has announced that they are planning to spend a significant sum on IT professionals next year, pledging to hire up to 500 technology experts to undertake work at a cost of some millions.
The retail giant has identified a need to upgrade its online platforms and will need the expertise of the nation’s flexible workforce to help them realise their plans. In an interview with the Mail on Sunday, a spokesperson for John Lewis said that they had increased the investment in their IT systems six-fold over the last six years which has necessitated a concomitant increase in the size of its workforce.
Their London offices are already home to around 500 technology staff and they are predicting that their hiring policy for the coming year will result in a total workforce size of around 2,000. They are expecting this to include some offshore contractors according to Andy Street, John Lewis’s managing director. Plans for the next three years include a move towards high-tech warehousing and a £500 million investment in their IT systems with the intention of improving their forward planning and shopper analysis capabilities.
This year saw John Lewis enjoy another profitable festive season, with online sales up 13.6 per cent on 2015 for the week leading to 5th December. In light of their website’s continued success, their goal for next year is to provide a ‘seamless journey’ for their customers in order to ensure that they can capitalise on their enviable reputation and popularity amongst shoppers.
