According to the March Monster Employment Index, demand for contractors via its online recruitment site was held at the same level as last month across all sectors, with a 9% increase over the same time period last year. This was a significant increase over the headline index annual growth figure – especially for some key contracting sectors. For example, demand for engineers was up by 26%, IT staff by 22% and construction staff by 25%. All of these also showed a monthly increase as well. Commenting on these results, Isabelle Ratinaud, Monster’s UK & Ireland spokesperson, said: “The private sector continues to grow steadily within industries such as IT, construction, transport and research and development” adding that the increase in demand for construction workers suggested ‘an emergence of contract and short-term opportunities for a wide spectrum of skilled trades’.

These positive figures come at the same time as the Office of National Statistics published its latest GDP estimate, which confirmed that the UK economy has returned to growth, led by core contracting sectors such as finance and business services.
