Over a million new jobs could be created by Europe’s growing digital economy
Contractors working in the technology sector might be interested to hear that over 1 million new job opportunities could be created within the next few years, thanks to Europe’s growing digital economy.
The report, “Online Jobs Boosting Europe’s Competitiveness’, carried out by Vlerick
Business School in Belgium on behalf of IAB Europe, has predicted that the EU online sector, which already employs 3.4 million people, could potentially create as many as 1.5 million new job opportunities.
Steve Muylle, Professor at Vlerick Business School, said of the findings, “Our research reveals that the internet sector has become significant in the EU and that it can serve as a powerful catalyst for economic growth. The latter will not only bring employment yet also foster innovation, such as in digital advertising.”
According to the study, the European digital economy could create between 400,000 and 1.5 million jobs, due to the impact of the online sector on GDP growth, which is particularly evident in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Sweden.
Kimon Zorbas, Vice President of IAB Europe, added, “We have discovered that if all European countries performed as well as Europe’s leading internet economy – Sweden – Europe has the potential to generate up to an additional 1.5 million jobs in the sector.
“Even if we align with the US average output we will be able to generate an additional 400,000 digital jobs in Europe. At a time of crisis this makes our sector a beacon for an economic recovery model.”
