Report shows uplift in demand for IT contractors
The Recruitment and Employment Confederation has published its Report on Jobs which has revealed some details of the level of demand for IT contractors. For the third month in a row, the national index used to measure demand has shown a very slight drop in the number of companies seeking IT contractors, although the overall level of demand for independent professionals is increasing.
The report scores demand for IT contractors, which was at a rate of 57.4 in February and 56.4 in March, meaning that there is still growth (indicated by any score higher than 50) and the skills gap is still meaning that businesses are seeking flexible workers to fill a range of roles.
Freelancers, contractors and other independent professionals are still very much sought-after in a number of sectors. This may be as a result of slower growth when it comes to permanent hires, a trend that has been attributed to the uncertainty over the results of the EU Referendum in June, and business concerns over the impact of a possible ‘Brexit’.
The changes that would be likely both in the UK and global economies are as yet undefined, so many companies are unwilling to commit to long-term outgoings that may not be viable should things change substantially.
This is another factor which makes the contracting market more buoyant, as businesses can have the best of both worlds – there is no need to halt natural growth if they can buy in skilled workers for the short-term without being over-committed in the long term.
The REC found that there are a shortage of candidates with certain skill, including experts in cyber security, infrastructure and development, meaning that there are plenty of opportunities for those who have relevant skills in those areas.
