Smaller firms quicker to hire oil & gas contractors
Oil and gas engineer contractors are more likely to turn to smaller operators when looking for job opportunities, as they have a much quicker hiring process.
Research carried out by Twenty Recruitment has shown that many of the larger companies within the oil and gas sector are missing out on the highly skilled contractors in the UK today, because of their complex and lengthy recruitment practice.
Director of the Energy Practice at Twenty Recruitment Dominic Morris, who specialises in recruiting oil and gas engineers, said that smaller operators are winning the majority of talented contractors simply because they have a faster hiring process.
Morris explained, “The contract market is a lot more fluid – contractors have access to half a dozen opportunities covering the length and breadth of the globe – and so the time to hire has to be short.
“These guys are not on the market for very long and it seems that some of the larger operators just don’t understand the nature of the flexible market. There seems to be far too much reliance on the power of the employer brand which just doesn’t cut it with the contract market.
“Organisations have to understand that these professionals will not wait around – they will be under pressure to make a decision as to whether to extend their current contract and so you need to use them or lose them!”
The research also looked into rates of pay, finding that larger operators are finding it difficult to fill contractor requirements.
Morris added, “The biggest requirement is for engineers with between eight and 15 years’ experience – we can find them but some of the larger companies just won’t pay the rates.
“Contractors with this level of experience can get attractive market rates on cutting edge projects with good rotation programmes in some fantastic locations. This is an industry that can offer assignments across the length and breadth of the globe.
“Consequently if the larger players are going to compete – they need to get quicker and more realistic about what is going to attract someone to work for them.”
