UK SMEs relying ever more heavily on contractors and freelancers
A new report by office space provider Regus indicates that, over the last six months, contractors and freelancers have been in greater demand by SME sized companies than ever before. In a survey of its customers, 49% said that they would be hiring more freelance or contract based staff and 39% said they will be looking for more staff who work remotely. Regus believes that this trend is due to SME companies needing to remain ‘rapidly scalable’ but still have access to the skilled staff they need, in order to complete essential projects.
Celia Donne, the Regional Director of Regus, commented on the report by saying, “SMEs realise that they must continue investing in growth, so freelance and remote working are becoming increasingly popular solutions to increase headcount while remaining flexible and rapidly scalable. 27% of the employed population in the UK are now deemed to be flexible workers, which illustrates the significant shift that has already taken place in the employment market.”
